Shifting the Story - Challenging the Stigma
Saturday, May 6, 2023
A unique and powerful experience awaits! Talk to brave community members one-to-one and learn about social and cultural stigmas that people experience at "Shifting the Story - Challenging the Stigma" on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
Brave community members will talk to you one-to-one about their experiences with stigma, including mental health, substance use, disabilities, 2SLGBQTIA+, Indigenous experience, immigrant experience, living unhoused, & other topics.
The “Shifting the Story - Challenging the Stigma” project is an interactive learning program that consists of a series of community connection sessions throughout local public library branches in the city of Surrey. This project is part of a global initiative originating in Europe, where "Storytellers" - people who have an unique story to share - and their "Readers" from the general public gather to learn through oral storytelling and dialogue. Through this process, participants hear personal stories and engage in direct conversations with members of the community that have diverse and often extraordinary backgrounds.
With human-to-human interaction, the dialogue that arise from conversations has the potential to confront bias, challenge stigma and discrimination, and encourage connection and compassion across a range of socioeconomic and cultural groups. The goal of this project is to increase community connectedness, improve compassion and understanding, and create more inclusive and cohesive communities.
