[ARCHIVED] Salish Sea Gull research at White Rock waterfront

Salish Sea Gull - Enviroment Canada

This month, researchers from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) will be at the White Rock waterfront studying local Glaucous-winged and California Gulls as part of an investigation into the health of the Salish Sea. The Salish Sea is a critical wintering site for marine birds and this research will provide insight into the impacts of human activities in the ecosystem.

Researchers will be conducting temporary capture and release of the gulls, which are a top predator and common resident in winter and summer, to assess their diet and habitat use. Their research will continue through February and March.

The project is a collaboration between Environment and Climate Change Canada, Simon Fraser University, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the University of Lethbridge.

To minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19, we ask that you please maintain physical distance if you encounter the research team. This study is operating under federal animal care, banding, and all other required permits, as well as local and federal health guidelines, to protect humans and animals alike.
