Statement: Relocation of Trees from Johnston Road to Maccaud Park

Johnston Road Revitalization Rendering

On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, the City, will be relocating trees from the centre meridian of Johnston Road (between Russell and Thrift). The trees will be replanted in Maccaud Park (1475 Kent Street). This tree relocation was noted on February 26, 2018, in the “Statement from the City on Tree Removal, Relocation and Replacement on Johnston Road.”

This work will disrupt traffic flow for the day, so we thank you in advance for your patience as crews work to safely remove and relocate these trees. Below is information to help you plan your commute for Tuesday, May 15:

The relocations of trees will start after 7:30AM; it is anticipated this work will be completed in the afternoon.

The south-bound lane will be closed during this time and there is no impact to the north-bound lane. Traffic control people will be available to control and manage traffic, however, if you are travelling in this section of the City, please expect delays or look for alternative routes.

Coast Mountain has been notified and will re-route the southbound lane buses. For more information, please go to Maps/Alerts

In February, the City began working on the Johnston Road Streetscape Revitalization project. The revitalization of the Johnston Road streetscape will improve the functionality and vibrancy of Johnston Road as the commercial and cultural ‘high street’ of the Town Centre and gateway into White Rock.

Like many famous highstreets in the world, healthy trees play an important role in creating an attractive, enjoyable space, which is why creating a green canopy is at the heart of the Johnston Road Streetscape Revitalization project. The new streetscape has been designed to maximize tree health, growth, and size by replanting trees in soil cells which are modular frameworks that hold the healthy soil that trees need for nourishment and create underground rain gardens that sustain them. So, rest assured that trees along Johnston Road will be replaced. In the meantime, we thank you for your patience as we work to revitalize our Uptown.
