The original pier opened in 1914 as a dock for coastal steamships. In the 1920s, a Royal Canadian Legion dance hall lay at its base on the shore and when it burned to the ground in 1935, subsequent buildings included the Panda Club and then a restaurant that also burned down in 1970. By 1976, the pier had deteriorated to such unsafe standards that it is only thanks to the community save-the-pier efforts that it found its current lease on life as a major tourist attraction, stretching out 470m into the ocean.
Art on Display runs at the White Rock Community Centre- Gallery. It is a multi-purpose art space dedicated to delivering art and cultural services to White Rock and South Surrey. Due to the many creative activities in this space, the gallery does not have set hours. Please call in advance for viewing 604-541-2199.
